Artist Bio: Anna Mathai is a Los Angeles-based artist and writer who creates dynamic sculptural paintings that interact with the light, using plaster, gold, and other materials. She is recognized for her abstract works that implement both the natural world and our internal ‘landscapes’ of emotion, blurring both tangible and intangible. Her art often touches on concepts of femininity, rebellion, and otherness through impressions of imagery from the natural world and the borders of fiction (or dream state). The pathos behind her work is inspired by her life and observations. Mathai was born in the UK to Indian parents but spent most of her childhood in rural Louisiana. She eventually moved to California, spending many years in the Bay Area, where she fell in love with nature. She has been awarded, featured in international art magazines, and exhibited nationwide.
Artist Statement: These works dwell on the immigrant experience and are inspired by the artist's own relationship to her Indian heritage over her lifetime, which was often at tension with her outside world, having grown up in rural Louisiana. The "heritage scrap" works are constructed of vintage sari silk and denim that are hardened and sculpted into abstract forms. "Immigrant Mandala" is a Venetian plaster piece that borrows visual elements of the artist's Indian and American upbringing to create a symbolic piece.
