The central panel features a hand and machine embroidered portrait of Baba Yaga. She is surrounded by a variety of objects: bone skull beads, amber beads, metal charms, plastic bones, glass and semi-precious stone beads. The house's chicken legs are made from wire and faux fur, the roof shingles are pierced leather."Baba Yaga" is an altar for the fairy tale/goddess figure that haunted my dreams. There is a reverence for her age and power as well as an acknowledgement of the dark side that lurks within all of us.

Bio: Shirley Ritter is a fiber and fabric artist whose books, quilts and art dolls have been exhibited in galleries from Palos Verdes and Santa Monica to Santa Fe, Vermont and Georgia. Her work has been featured in several national magazines including “Art Doll Quarterly” and several of her pieces have toured the United States with the Hoffman Fabric Challenge. She is a founding member of the Los Angeles Book Arts Guild and an avid book artist with two current  pieces going on exhibit at the Georgia Center for the Book in “The Book as Art v.12: Rock, Paper, Scissors” show in September 2024.

Shirley has been involved with local school arts programs for over 21 years and has taught after school art classes, been a docent and program chair for the Young At Art program in the South Bay, and had her art projects taught to thousands of school children in Southern California. Shirley is also a professional actress and has appeared in over 100 stage productions locally. In addition to performing, she uses her fabrication skills to create props, costumes and puppets for some of these productions.
