"Maa II, 2021" by Kruti Shah
Maa II, 2021. Inks and acrylics on canvas and paper. 11” X 14”, framed. $150
Maa means mother in my native language and we often refer to goddesses as Maa. This work depicts the eyes of Maa Kali, the incarnation of goddess Parvati to kill demons. Behind her fearsome appearance lies a compassionate heart. She is a warrior goddess, a power house and the Devine feminine filled with intense energy to shatter all obstacles in her way.
Bio: Kruti was born in India and is a self-taught artist. Her inspirations and subjects come from day to day and sometime from the mythological stories she heard as a child. MAA II is from her body of works called “Gods on India” and it is her version of Goddess Kali.
Goddess Kali is portrayed in diverse forms across India, largely reflecting the various ways in which she has merged with the local traditions and cultural fabric of different regions of the country. 'Kali' is derived from the word 'Kala' which means both darkness and time. It is believed that Kali represents the force of time, carrying both destruction and creation of life and the universe. Thus, this Goddess is unique in the way she is formless and absolute, and at the same time capricious in her ever-changing forms. All material used in making are recycled/upcycled with a goal to make her work Eco-friendly and in a hope of making sustainable art – one piece at a time.
