"Mother Nature’s Bustier, 2023" by Aleka Corwin
Mother Nature’s Bustier, 2023. Mixed media sculpture, 15” x 13” x 13”. $1200
Plastic Kitty litter containers, plastic animals, acrylic paint, cut paper, buttons, pom-pom trim, washers, buttons, stickers, plastic toys, butterflies, wire, styrofoam, silk flowers, plastic palm trees. Mother Nature’s Bustier: The outside represents everything in the world, and inside her is a calm oasis and a Butterfly Garden.
Statement: I am an eco-artist. I utilize recycled and found materials to create my work: masks, dioramas, sculptures, artist’s books, drawings, collages, and prints . I create with
paper maché, playdough, paper, pressed cardboard cartons, found objects, fabric, toys, buttons, ceramic and packing materials. My artistic practice utilizes mythology, dream imagery, humor, and whimsy. I am influenced by world folk art and artists Red Grooms, Robert Rauschenberg and Betye Saar. I am inspired by Latin American masks, primitive Mid-Century American tourist art, and children’s drawings. My goal is to capture the innocence of childhood, fantasies, folklore, and the wit of Dada. I am always in search of recycled and found objects, craft materials, photos and text to tell my stories of imaginary worlds, wild creatures, dreams, and imagery from our collective unconscious. My goal is to create intimate fragments of time, creatures and places to engage the imagination of my viewers.
Bio: I create art from materials around me. I attended The High School of Music and Art in New York City, graduated Sarah Lawrence College majoring in Painting and Folklore & Mythology. I studied printmaking in Paris and taught silk screening as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo, West Africa. I received my M.A. in Feminist Art Education from Goddard College while studying with artist Judy Chicago at the Feminist Studio Workshop, Los Angeles. I worked for fifteen years as a set decorator for film and television. I worked as a mask/puppet/prop/set maker for theatrical productions around the world. I currently teach art to adults and children, write poetry, make masks, drawings, sculptures, and collages, take photos, and create dioramas. During the Covid 19 pandemic I made a series of paper mâché masks entitled “Crazy Covid Clown Masks,” which have been exhibited online, in print, and in galleries around Los Angeles. I show my work in galleries around the country and my pieces are in many private collections around the world.
