"The Plastic Ballroom gown, 2024" by Mary Cheung
The Plastic Ballroom gown, 2024. Adjustable size 12 - 14 ballroom gown with train, $750.
Statement: This gown made of shopping bags is from a series called "Once Upon A Time”, a retelling of a Cinderella story and how the underprivileged use their ingenuity to achieve their dreams. This started out as a challenge to myself as to what I could do to recycle plastic and to re-imagine fashion.
About the artist: “I am a multi-disciplinary artist, an innovative Artist and Costume Designer. My work contains a strong sense of story as well as a highly sensuous style. I mostly work in painting or photography creating conceptual art and sometimes I make art that is wearable and innovative. I have been creating art since I was young. Grew up the youngest in a family of eight. I came to America at the age of 2 and grew up in San Francisco. Attended American school during the day and Chinese school at night.
Art to me is very personal and not always everyone’s cup of tea. Art is an outlet for me, and a valuable tool for connecting people to each other. I have an AA degree in Fashion Design and a Best Costume Design Award from the NAACP. I often create costumes for my art narratives and creations. I’ll also build the sets if needed. My real passion and drive come from being able to engage the community while bringing hope, healing, joy, and Human Connection. It is my goal to be able to continue to do this while making an impact on society’s values and thinking.”
